The Valley Of The Ashes
An area halfway between New York City and West Egg, the Valley of Ashes is an industrial wasteland covered in ash and soot. If New York City represents all the "mystery and beauty in the globe," and W Egg represents the people who have gotten rich off the roaring economy of the Roaring Twenties, the Valley of Ashes stands for the dismal ruin of the people caught in between.

This is a Valley of Ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who motility dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls forth an invisible track, gives out a ghastly crepitate, and comes to residual, and immediately the ash-greyness men swarm up with leaden spades and stir upward an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight.

Just his eyes, dimmed a piddling by many paintless days under dominicus and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground.
